French Hand-Blown Glass and Bakelite Absinthe Glasses, 3 pieces, 1910s

About the Item

This is an authentic set of three French Absinthe glasses manufactured by Franckhauser in Lyon circa 1910. French bistros, bars, and cafes used these heavy glasses in the ritual of drinking the addictive beverage called "la fée verte" (the green fairy). Popular with intellectuals and artists at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, Absinthe was eventually banned in France by 1915. After the ban on the sale of Absinthe in 1915, these Bakelite-stemmed glasses continued to be used in Bars and Bistros in France to serve strong aperitifs such as Pernod or Vermouth until the late 1930s. These three glasses have a classic hand-blown tulip shape with weighted bottoms and a Bakelite pedestal base. Slotted spoons, holding a sugar cube, were placed on the rims of these glasses. Ice water was dripped over the sugar, diluting the green Absinthe and turning it into a milky white Pastis. Each glass is marked underside the Bakelite base with the brand logo for Franckhauser - Breveté - SGDG - Lyon. The Bakelite bases are in a dark green tone. Handmade artisan glasses will vary slightly in size and weight. The glasses are in good antique condition with minor age wear. Measurements: 3.13 in diameter (8 cm) x 5.32 in high (13.5 cm).
