Set of 8 International Wedgwood Sterling Silver Goblets
About the Item
Set of 8 Wedgwood sterling silver goblets. Made by International Silver Co. in Meriden, Conn., ca 1920. Each: Ovoid bowl on cylindrical stem with base knop mounted to raised foot. At mouth rim raised band with Neoclassical ornament, including paterae and amphorae, entwined with flowers and scrolls between beaded and Vitruvian scroll borders. At foot border alternating volute scrolls and W’s. Seven goblets have gilt-washed interior. An elegant tribute to the historic English pottery firm. Fully marked including maker’s stamp and pattern name and no. P65. Total weight: 45.3 troy ounces.

The surface of this vintage silver goblet has a subtly planished finish. The body of the goblet is further ornamented with three impressive cast and applied leaf designs, emanating and conjoining with the plain waisted stem. The plain domed circular foot features an impressive tiered arrangement. This exceptional goblet was crafted by the female silversmith Joan Ruxton and assayed in Sheffield; the vessel is hallmarked with the date letter 'X' (1965) and the underside bears the mark 'A' (1968)*. * It can be determined that this artisanal silversmith will have opted to create an addition plate for the base to provide further weight to the piece, this component was hallmarked at a later date to the initial vessel. The decoration to the body incorporates a large oval vacant cartouche to either side. The upper portion of the goblet is encompassed with bright cut engraved interlacing and scalloped borders below an applied moulded rim. The knop to the stem is encircled with a bead decorated border. The foot is ornamented with further bright cut engraved simplified leaf festoon decoration accented with a scalloped border to the rim.
