About the Item

These 12 Scandinavian Modern small bowls carries a sense of grace and elegance, inviting us to appreciate the beauty that can be found in the most delicate and intricate of creations. Friedl Holzer-Kjellberg, 1905-1993, graduated as a ceramic artist in Graz and moved to Finland in 1924. In 1939 and onwards, she began seriously developing rice porcelain after she had the opportunity to sketch objects at the Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna. She drew inspiration from a white Chinese rice bowl from the 17th century. She had a strong interest in glazes and glaze techniques. She experimented extensively with old recipes and descriptions, eventually achieving the thin and translucent results she sought. After this, she exclusively worked with porcelain. Everything from the clay preparation to the finishing touches and the creation of holes in the clay was done by hand. At its peak, up to 20 people were employed in this process. The entire department was highly specialized and sensitive because many things could go wrong. The production of rice porcelain was discontinued in 1974.
