About the Item

Antique Savona Ceramic Albarello, 18th Century Beautiful polychrome painted majolica tree, cylindrical body with rounded shoulders from which rises a small flared neck with a cut rim. Low, slightly flared foot on a rounded base. The decoration, created using the “a gran fuoco” big fire technique, in monochrome blue on a white tin glaze background, features an elegant young nobleman framed by cartouches on the front, probably the portrait of the person who commissioned this important vase. This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important Italian private collection. Every item of our Gallery, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Sabrina Egidi official Expert in Italian furniture for the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and for the Rome Civil Courts. Savona ceramics The centuries-old relationship between Savona and ceramics stems from the favourable availability of the raw materials needed to produce these artefacts. Added to this is the ability of artisans to pass on their knowledge from generation to generation, updating models, shapes and repertoires over time in response to changes in art, taste and styles. The earliest evidence of ceramics in Savona dates back to the 12th–13th centuries, when the city became one of the most important centres for ceramics in the Mediterranean. During the 17th century, Savona ceramics spread throughout the world thanks to the development of Orientalising styles (naturalistic and tapestry) and Baroque historiography. The activity has continued ever since. Savona majolica best represents the integration of art and territory. Museums, churches, monuments and street furniture contain many examples of the fruitful relationship between the city and ceramics, and ancient knowledge is still being passed on in the various factories today.
