About the Item

Tableau consisting of twelf Dutch tiles depicting the Baptism of Jezus by Saint John in the river Jordan, a castle behind. The twelf tiles are carefully painted in a manganese color wich was very much 'en vogue' around 1800. Judging by the spiral shaped side decorations the tableau was executed around 1800. (this type of spirals where used since the classical infuences in the end of the 18th century) However the style of the painting goes back to the Dutch school of the 17th century. Especially the castle shows influences of Dutch painters as Jan van Goyen (1596-1656). Above the head of Jesus is a dove, symbol of the Holy Ghost. Condition: Overall in good condition, some small damage in the tiles above the head of Jesus. Typical antique Dutch tile tableau of outstanding quality. The tiles are fitted in a wooden frame. Dimensions: 54 x 40, 3,7 cm.
