About the Item

A beautiful mid-century modern ceramic wall plaque from the Helene Ugo pottery studio in Vallauris, France, created around 1957. Decorated by Michel Barbier, it features an abstract, Cubist-inspired design, reminiscent of Picasso's style, with hand-incised and painted details in bold matte black and yellow glazes. The surface has a smooth, pumice-like texture that enhances its visual appeal. Vallauris, a renowned pottery region in southeastern France, was deeply influenced by Picasso’s residency there from 1948 to 1955. During this "golden age" of French pottery, prominent ceramicists like Roger Capron and Charles Voltz were also active, contributing to a rich artistic revival in the area. Picasso’s influence is evident in the abstract forms and vibrant design of this piece. This plaque is an ideal addition to any European, French, studio, or art pottery collection and serves as a striking, bright accent for retro, mid-century, vintage, or contemporary interiors. Condition: Very good. Dimensions: 32 x 22 x 1.6 cm (12.5 x 8.75 x 0.6 in). The back is stamped "Made in France" mark and a hand signature in black paint reading "Vallauris".
