"Flowers and Fruit, " Rare, High Style Intaglio Art Deco Charger, Ford Ceramics

About the Item

Extremely rare and beautifully made, this large, sand-colored charger was made by Ford Ceramic Arts in Columbus, Ohio in the 1930s, using an expensive photographic process patented by one of the company's founders, Walter D. Ford. Ford had graduated from Ohio State University in 1930 with a degree in ceramic engineering, and was interested in developing a process for producing photographic images in relief or intaglio. Very few pieces were created, however, given that the process for creating designs was expensive and time-consuming, so this large charger may be the only example in existence. This piece depicts a profusion of flowers, leaves and fruits, all lightly incised into the clay, allowing the glaze to pool in each incised area, creating lines of darker color. The charger is marked with Ford's logo on the reverse.
