A George Jones Majolica Game Tureen with a Quail and Her Chicks, English, 1874

About the Item

A George Jones Majolica Game Tureen, the base with relief molded rabbits among ferns and grasses on both sides, with oak leaves, acorns, and ivy encircling all around the mossy branch lip, with two bound mossy branch handles, the lid formed as a nesting quail and her seven chicks, one tucked under her wing, the reverse with impressed marks: 'GJ' monogram, British Registry Mark for 27 December 1873, and painted design number '3371' to the thumbprint reserve, which corresponds to the entry, 'Hare Game Pie Dish Hen & Chicks,' as found in the George Jones Majolica Pattern Books preserved in the Wedgwood Archives, Victoria & Albert Museum and included in Bergesen.
