Georgian Black Basalt Creamer Jug by Turner, English circa 1800

About the Item

This is a very good Black Basalt Creamer Jug or small pitcher, which we attribute to John Turner of Lane End, Longton, Staffordshire Potteries, circa 1762 to 1806 of the English Georgian period. The jug has a classical "silver" shape of the period, with a moulded shaped oval form and a high loop handle having an upper spur. It is decorated with crisply defined sprig relief mouldings of classical figures, with a different scene on either side. It also has further decoration and different border patterns above the base rim, around the shoulder & upper rim and on the handle. The inside has a shiny black glaze. We cannot find any makers marks on this piece which was often the case. Though we attribute this piece to John Turner, there were other Staffordshire makers of Black Basalt items notably David Dunderdale of Castleford, Yorkshire who was manufacturing in the same period. Overall a good rare piece of early black basalt with no damage. IMAGES: Please note that some of the images have reflections due to the shiny glaze on the inside of the jug.
