About the Item

Find your fancy in a ‘miniature’ by Berndt Friberg. . Berndt Friberg was born in 1899 in Hoganas, Sweden. He began working in a ceramic factory in his hometown at the at the young age of 13 years old. Being an artist was a legacy, and he inherited his grandfather’s tools and was trained by his uncle. It was all in the family, and the benefits of this training paid off when in 1934 he became employed with the highly regarded Gustavsberg ceramic factory in Stockholm. Working with artists such as Wilhelm Käge as a thrower, he influenced all those around him. Despite starting at such a young age, Friberg didn’t gain artistic recognition until an exhibition in Stockholm when he was 42 years old. His works in this series are unique in scale. He created them no taller than 1 or 2 inches. He was influenced by the traditions of Chinese stoneware from the Song Dynasty. His secretly held glazes were notorious and kept hidden in a coveted notebook. His work persisted until his death in 1981. Friberg became well-known for his precision, and a love for all things delicate. . The piece above is one of Friberg’s bowls, a “Miniature” from the 1970s with incised marking and inscription by the artist on the base standing at 1 3/4 x 2 5/8 inches. Artwork is in very good condition for artwork for this period.
