About the Item
Important heraldic Spanish tile of the 'azulejo por tabla para techo' type, in arista y cuenca technique, made in Sevilla in the early 16th century.
Depicting a two-section tower and a supported staircase, in blue, ocher, green and manganese tones.
The Arista technique is a decorative technique that consists of printing the decorative motif on the raw ceramic surface, using a mold that leaves the profiles of each contour in relief. These profiles or edges prevent the glass of different colors applied subsequently from mixing. This decorative technique has been used in the production of tiles since the 15th century. Sometimes the edge is reinforced with a manganese pigment. This technique is developed, in addition to Seville, in Toledo. There are differences between the different lights in terms of colors used, designs and pastes. At the beginning of the 16th century, Seville sold tiles to the rest of Spain, Europe and America. The tile at this time is a symbol of opulence: Palaces and rich houses are covered. Tapestries of richly colored fabrics were imitated. The tile has the clear advantage over tapestries that it is resistant to external agents and is constantly shiny. The land that was used to make the tiles comes from the Vega de Triana. The main pigments were the following: Cobalt blue, ink green, malachite green, black, honey and yellow.
This particular 'Dos par Tabla para Techo' type was to adorn ceilings.
Tile decorated in renaissance with stylized flowers was probably in Sevilla in the first half of the 16th century.
