About the Item

3-part core piece consisting of coffee pot, teapot and milk jug made of Terre de Namur ceramics. Terre de Namur The fine black faience is a particular product of Namur, Belgium, late 18th century. It is a red-brown, very dark, almost black clay paste, which comes very close to fine red stoneware, provided with a very shiny, black glaze and artistically set with finely chiseled silver mounts. The color of Terre de Namur is inspired by British terracotta. In the second half of the 18th century, the ceramics industry in England was at its peak, producing a large number of new types, with black variants being particularly popular. Starting in England, the use of black earth was also imitated on the European mainland, whereby the traditional continental forms were retained in the design. This pottery bears no mark. At the end of the 18th century, the production of black earthenware crockery in Namur was limited because it was only made from a very small deposit of black clay in Bonneville. The offer was therefore primarily aimed at the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie of the County of Namur. Coffee pots and other pieces made from this clay can be found in the collections of several museums.
