About the Item

A rare and unusual Maw & Co, Jackfield, English majolica aesthetic movement art pottery plaque decorated with a chariot attributed to designer Walter Crane and dating from around 1885. The stoneware oval shaped plaque is heavily potted standing raised on a narrow oval unglazed foot rim. The plaque is decorated in relief with a chariot drawn by two horses with a driver and a Roman centurion holding a sword and spear and galloping through a tree lined landscape. The scene is bordered by a raised rim decorated in relief with a repeat decorative pattern. The plaque is decorated in blue turquoise glazes which have pooled in places to give a contrasting darker effect. The plaque has impressed makers marks to the base. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art market. In good original condition with light wear associated with age and use.
