About the Item

Portuguese earthenware plate from Sacavém. Decorated with red and grey friezes from the Sacavém Porcelain Factory, identified by the brand "Gilman & Cª SACAVÉM". This Portuguese factory was one of the most important in the ceramics and porcelain sector in Portugal, operating between the end of the 19th century and the 20th century. The visible mark on the back of the plate, in a green tone, is characteristic of the factory's production, especially during the period when it was run by John Stott Howorth Gilman. The plate's design is simple and elegant, featuring a solid red center ring surrounded by thin black lines, creating a minimalist geometric pattern. The contrast between the bright red and the white background of the plate adds a touch of sophistication and modernity to the design, which may indicate that the piece was produced in the mid-20th century, when more simplified and functional styles were in fashion. The surface of the plate has a crackle, a natural effect that occurs in ceramic enamel due to the passage of time, reinforcing the authenticity and antiquity of the piece. The Sacavém Factory produced a wide range of pieces, from utilitarian crockery to decorative pieces, and was recognized for the quality and beauty of its products. This plate, with its discreet design and trademark, represents an important part of the legacy of Portuguese ceramics, standing out for both its functionality and aesthetic appeal. Marked on the back Gilman & Cª SACAVÉM.
