About the Item

This is a Naples (Capodimonte) Porcelain Lidded Tankard with deep relief body, which we date to the early 19th Century and made in Naples, Italy. The tankard is hand made with deep relief decoration of a hunting scene with men on horseback or gladiators holding swords and spears, under attack by lions. The tankard has an ornate moulded loop handle with an upper thumb rest. The lid is surmounted with a seated lion surrounded by leaf decoration. The moulding is very well done , particularly the lion on the lid. The piece is all well hand painted in many realistic colours with a puce colour used for the leaf borders. These pieces sometimes have gilt metal mounts but this piece has none and shows no signs of ever having had any. The piece is unmarked to the base.
