About the Item

Exceptional Art Déco model of the Goldscheider company, extremely rarely produced and not listed in the catalogue raisonné: Man in traditional Japanese costume – long coat with floral decoration held together by a belt, cap and wooden-soled shoes, riding on a large fish and leaning forward to cling to its gills, the fish looking up unhappily with wide-open eyes. The fish swims on the elongated sea base with a decorative relief of moving waves, the artist's signature ‘KOSTIAL’ on the side behind the tail fin. In Japan, carp are referred to as ‘koi’ – they symbolise power, prosperity and long life, and, depending on their markings, also represent the country of Japan itself. Since koi carry many eggs, they also evoke associations with fertility and children. They are also a symbol of strength, as they are the only fish that can conquer the waterfalls of the Yellow River. Designed by Josef KOSTIAL (1886-1953) - Sculptor, attended the state trade school and studied for two years at the art academy in Vienna. In addition to his designs for Goldscheider, he also created sculptures for the film. Designed circa 1920/1921, made circa 1921 Manufactory: Goldscheider Vienna / Austria Material & Technique: hand-crafted ceramics, white earthenware, hand-painted, glossy finish Size: Height: 17,5 cm / 6.88 in Width: 22,5 cm / 8.85 in Depth: 12,5 cm / 4.92 in Marks: Model number 4979 / 1 / 10 Goldscheider Wien (Vienna) manufactory stamp used 1917-1922 Painter's and former's signs existing Artist signature 'Kostial' on the side of the base behind the tail fin Bibliography: DECHANT / GOLDSCHEIDER, GOLDSCHEIDER: Firmengeschichte und Werkverzeichnis / History of the company and catalogue of works, Stuttgart (Germany), 2007, not listed Condition: Very good - usual signs of age
