Rare Art Déco Ceramic, Japanese Riding On A Koi, Goldscheider Vienna, Ca 1921
About the Item
Exceptional Art Déco model of the Goldscheider company, extremely rarely produced and not listed in the catalogue raisonné:
Man in traditional Japanese costume – long coat with floral decoration held together by a belt, cap and wooden-soled shoes, riding on a large fish and leaning forward to cling to its gills, the fish looking up unhappily with wide-open eyes.
The fish swims on the elongated sea base with a decorative relief of moving waves, the artist's signature ‘KOSTIAL’ on the side behind the tail fin.
In Japan, carp are referred to as ‘koi’ – they symbolise power, prosperity and long life, and, depending on their markings, also represent the country of Japan itself. Since koi carry many eggs, they also evoke associations with fertility and children. They are also a symbol of strength, as they are the only fish that can conquer the waterfalls of the Yellow River.
Designed by Josef KOSTIAL (1886-1953) - Sculptor, attended the state trade school and studied for two years at the art academy in Vienna. In addition to his designs for Goldscheider, he also created sculptures for the film.
