About the Item
Rare large mug was handmade by Bybee Pottery and hand decorated in their trademark blue spongeware style.
Bybee Pottery is an art pottery in Madison County, Kentucky USA, that was operated by various members of Cornelison family from 1809 to 2019. While the earliest sales records start from 1845, even this later date makes the pottery the oldest industry in Madison County. Their pieces are made of local red clay that is mined close to the pottery; each piece is thrown and shaped by hand. The glaze is applied with intentional imperfections, such as glaze skips, to emphasize handmade processing and rustic appeal of the pieces.
The mug measures 4.5" tall with 3" opening. It is clearly signed on the bottom; it's in good vintage condition with no signs of use.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

Vitrix Hot Glass Studio Oversized Mug or Vase, NY Art Glass, 1983
By Vitrex, Thomas Buechner III
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural Organic Modern oversized mug was hand blown with thin layer of white glass underlying the deep, jewel-like dark purple fused glass in abstract pattern that is swirling around the gentle curves of the piece; the whole structure is enclosed in thin layer of clear glass in sommerso technique, adding depth and definition to the piece. The central part of the pattern is brough up close to the surface, creating a light texture and adding rare tactile quality to the piece; the upper and lower parts of the pattern are receding into the white background, accentuating the curving sides of the mug. Minimal shape of the piece allows the bold flow of the pattern to take the center stage, and clear glass handle offers minimal distraction from the design while adding functionality. The piece can be used either as a mug or a vase due to large, generous size.
The piece is signed and dated in etching on the bottom; rare, hard to find example of vintage Vitrix glasswork would make a great gift to any studio glass or art collector.
