About the Item

This rare stoneware vase was designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden. The unique vase is finished in a blue harfur glaze which was entirely applied by hand. The hand finish allows for a beautiful transition of the colors ranging from different shades of blue, green and a hint of grey. This finish gives the design a very refined and textured appearance. The vase is in very good original condition. Marked with the Rörstrand logo, Sweden, CHS (Carl-Harry Stålhane) and the base model SAM. About Carl-Harry Stålhane Carl-Harry Stålhane was a prominent Swedish ceramist of international acclaim for the unique hand-built stoneware and industrial tableware that he produced throughout the 20th century. Stålhane enjoyed a 40-year career at Rörstrand ceramics and established his own workshop, Designhuset, where he created experimental ceramics from 1973 onwards. Stålhane initially worked under the supervision of expressionist painter Isaac Grünewald, and later the two artists worked in collaboration. Their collaborative efforts were so successful that Stålhane and Grünewald were invited to exhibit their ceramics at the Swedish National Museum. By the age of 30, Stålhane was a master ceramist, and in 1953 he was appointed art director and chief designer for Rörstrand, succeeding important mid-century ceramist Gunnar Nylund. Stålhane's earlier works are characterized by elegant and slender, symmetrical forms in monochrome or matte glazes in a style that embraced Chinese Sung ceramic art traditions. His sheer and elegant stoneware vases from the 1950s with speckled eggshell-like and harfur glazes in muted shades have received a marked increase in demand in recent years and are often included in international interiors and collection. His artworks are represented at MoMA in New York as well as Victorian and Albert Museum in London. Other ceramicists of the period include Berndt Friberg, Axel Salto, Wilhelm Kåge, Lucie Rie and Hans Cooper.
