Sant'Anna Portuguese Earthenware Dish Plate
About the Item
Sant'Anna Portuguese earthenware dish. Polychrome decoration, the centre depicting a romantic scene in which a gentleman bends down in a gallant gesture to kiss the hand of a lady sitting on a bench, in a bucolic and serene setting. The painting, in shades of blue and white, evokes traditional Portuguese tiles.
The ornate border features elements in yellow and blue tones, forming a set of volutes, arabesques and floral motifs in relief, giving the composition a baroque and exuberant touch. This decorative technique harks back to the old faience dishes of the 18th century, emphasising the artistic and historical value of the piece.
The Fábrica de Sant'Anna, founded in Lisbon in 1741, keeps alive the artisanal techniques of painting on earthenware, preserving the authenticity and tradition of Portuguese ceramics.
