Wilhelm Kage, "Farsta" Patterned Vase, the Gustavsberg Manufactory, Sweden, 1930

About the Item

Wilhelm Kage, "Farsta" Pale Brown glazed vase with line and patten design, The Gustavsberg Manufactory, Sweden 1930's Impressed "Farsta", "Gustavsberg G (hand) Studio" "KÅGE Cylindrical vase work, probably from the early 1930s. The outside of the body and the inside of the mouth rim are decorated with brush paintings. It looks as if it could be an old Japanese ceramic ware, especially an e-Seto teacup, and it is hard to believe that it was made in Sweden in the 1930s. Whether she copied the real thing or used a photograph as a reference, she has recognised old Japanese ceramics, chewed them up herself and incorporated them into her work. The entire surface of the vessel is coated with brown glazed, and a pattern is drawn on top with white glaze, and then the entire surface is covered with a cloudy white glaze. The teacup-like shape makes you want to use it, but in fact the vessel is large and solid, and is made as a vase-shaped object. Although the year of production cannot be clearly determined from the signature on the base, it is assumed to be between 1930 and 1933, as many of the works in Farsta's series were made with an awareness of old Japanese ceramics in the first few years of their production. It is very interesting to note that Kage's earliest works are more influenced by Japanese antique ceramics than Chinese antique ceramics. It is in very good condition. The vessel has been examined by an expert by UV light and visual inspection to ensure that there are no repairs and that it is not twice kiln fired.
