About the Item

One of ten earthenware bowl and vase designs, the ‘Kokos’, or Coconut, series was only produced in 1954. This piece is one of a sought after design by the innovative and renowned Swedish artist, Hjördis Oldfors. The details of linear relief are a defining attribute along with a yellow interior and exterior of unglazed clay. Oldfors was born in Gothenburg. Her contemporaries, who are also part of the Object Space collection, were Marie Simmulson and Ingrid Atterberg. Before attending the School of Design and Crafts at the age of 30, she was in banking and came to her apprenticeship later than some. Her designs at Upsala-Ekeby were praised for their use of color, resolute approach, and their succinct accessibility. Not only were they exciting for the age, these gems continue to stand the test of time within an ever growing field of fine craft in the world today. Recognizing her avid work in ceramics, we also know she had an expanded practice in fibre, painting, as well as teaching.
