French 19th Century Massive Glass Leech Bowl

About the Item

A bit of science and medical history, this is a 19th century French bowl that would have housed parasitic leeches for use in bloodletting exercises on ailing patients before more appropriate treatments for common maladies were developed. Today, this massive glass vessel makes a stunning and unusually spherical vase for flowers, a fish bowl or displaying collections of small objects. The bowl is wider than it is tall, supported by a tall, solid glass stem and pedestal–an impressive statement that will surely be a conversation piece in any interior.
