About the Item

Lead crystal wine glass, with airtwist & coloured thread stem. Made for the coronation of Edward VIII; a coronation that did not happen. Edward VIII, born Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David on June 23, 1894, was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. He became King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India upon his father's death in January 1936. However, his reign lasted for less than a year due to the constitutional crisis caused by his desire to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite who had been divorced twice. Edward VIII's relationship with Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced woman, led to a constitutional crisis as the Church of England and British government opposed his proposed marriage to her. Faced with opposition, Edward chose to abdicate the throne on December 11, 1936, in order to marry Wallis Simpson. His younger brother, Albert, Duke of York, ascended the throne as King George VI.
