About the Item

This is a delightful blue-lined cut crystal decanter, the "Eurydice" model. This model was featured in the 1904-1905 catalogue of the famous Belgian crystal manufacturer Val Saint Lambert. With its high, conical shape and rich workmanship, this model is one of the most famous by this great company. Period: Early 20th century Dimensions: Height: 41.5cm - Base diameter: 10cm In 1826, two employees of the Vonêche crystal works set up their own crystal works in the Val Saint Lambert abbey. François Kemlin was a chemist and Auguste Lelièvre a polytechnician. The site on the banks of the Meuse was well chosen. The region was active in metallurgy and it would be easy to obtain the lead needed to make crystal. Thanks to the financial support of Guillaume d'Orange and Baron Joseph de Bonaert, the Société anonyme des Verreries et Établissements du Val Saint-Lambert was created. It was bought out in 1836 by Société Générale de Belgique, and its products were soon exported all over the world. At the Brussels Exhibition of Belgian Industrial Products in 1841, Val Saint Lambert won a gold medal for its pure, refined and colourful crystal. At the end of the 19th century, Val Saint Lambert presented crystal creations with geometric motifs for the first time. The success was phenomenal. The company built huge hangars and a hundred houses for the workers. It modernised with electric lighting, a gasworks and a railway line to the factory. The factory was at its peak at the beginning of the 20th century. Crystal virtuosos such as Dieudonné Masson rubbed shoulders with the crème de la crème of designers, the Muller brothers from Nancy or Gallé and Daum, followed by Joseph Simon and Philippe Wolfers. Val Saint Lambert also worked with designers such as Yan Zoritchac, Frans Van Praet, Philippe Delvaux and Philippe Starck. Val Saint Lambert's technical genius for crystal and the art of making everything it touches sublime enabled it to be invited into the highest spheres, from the tables of Belgian and European high society to the courts of the Russian tsars, the palaces of the maharajas, and the ocean liners of the Red Star Line or the Orient-Express. For almost 200 years, Val Saint Lambert of Seraing, Belgium, has produced some of the most elegant and prestigious works of crystal and glass. Holding the distinction of being the world’s only Belgian glassworks, Val Saint Lambert creates exquisite items including ashtrays, serveware, vases and sculptures.

Founded by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company opened its first glassworks in 1826. Its quality manufacturing of heavy-lead crystal and the expert craftsmanship of its wares quickly led to the company’s popularity.

In 1894, Val Saint Lambert exhibited its geometric-cut crystal at the World’s Fair in Antwerp, Belgium. The central piece was “le Vase des Neuf Provinces,” or “The Vase of the Nine Provinces.” Under the direction of French glassmaker Léon Ledru, it took 30 artisans over 2,000 hours to fashion it from 85 individually crafted pieces. The exposure led to Val Saint Lambert becoming the primary crystal used by the Tsars of Russia and the company’s pieces being sold internationally.

That same year, the company crafted two immense crystal chandeliers for the Maharaja of Gwalior to hang in his palace in India. Weighing almost five tons each and measuring over 42 feet high, they were the largest crystal chandeliers in the world at the time.

The company closed its doors for the duration of World War I but soon reopened. By 1926, it had over 5,000 employees and had a growing demand for its pieces made in the Art Deco style.

During World War II, bombing from German and Allied forces destroyed the main glassworks facility. The company rebuilt, but by 1950, crystal was becoming more of a household item and less of a luxury good.

In the subsequent decades, Val Saint Lambert collaborated with notable names to expand its offerings with sophisticated furniture, including work with Philippe Starck and Frans Van Praet. In 1992, Van Praet designed the famed Sevilla chair for Val Saint Lambert, a piece highly prized by collectors and designers.

In 2014, Belgian manufacturer Jacques Somville took over Val Saint Lambert. In 2018, Belgian entrepreneur George Arthur Forrest acquired the majority of the company. Val Saint Lambert continues to make some of the finest glass and crystal wares in the world.
