About the Item

A Dutch Delft charger, decorated in petit-feu polychrome enamels and gilding, early 18th century. The central shield, painted with three hunting horns, is surmounted by a coronet and flanked by scrolling mantling with a cherub mask below. The arms are enclosed by a wreath of floral ornament. The broad rim alternates trellis-pattern cartouches with stylized floral devices in iron-red, turquoise, and manganese. The decoration was executed using the petit-feu technique, in which the tin-glazed body was first fired with a glaze and then refired at a lower temperature to accommodate overglaze enamels and gilding. This process, introduced in Delft in the early 18th century, allowed potters to extend the chromatic range beyond the earlier blue-and-white palette, directly responding to the vogue for imported Chinese armorial porcelain made to European order (so-called chine de commande). Delft armorial plates and chargers such as the present example reproduce the heraldic format and ornamental vocabulary of these Chinese prototypes, adapting them into the local ceramic tradition. The heraldic device corresponds to the arms of Zegveld, a village in the province of Utrecht. Armorial chargers of this group were produced on commission for civic authorities or prominent families, often to commemorate alliances or appointments. A small number of related Delft armorial dishes are known, some inscribed with the date 1728 on the reverse, situating this charger within that series and providing a secure chronological framework. Old restoration, likely involving a stabilized hairline crack with an applied surface repair and overpainting. Possibly our dish is also dated on the back, but this is probably concealed beneath this restoration. We are currently offering this rare piece as-is, but, in consultation with the buyer, we would be happy to provide advice or arrange a modern restoration to enhance its beauty.
