10 French Orchies Faience Majolica Asparagus and Artichoke Plates with Platter
About the Item
A rare and exceptional 19th century set of 10 majolica glazed French faïence barbotine artichoke and asparagus plates complete with oval shaped master server or platter by Orchies, circa 1880s. In the Art Nouveau style, this individually molded, hand painted, and glazed service captures our attention with its beautiful colors, showing the stylized leaves of both plants, with two artichoke globes and deep purple tipped asparagus on a white background. Made to serve fresh asparagus and/or artichokes, the plate and platter both have a scalloped rim and a deep well for butter, hollandaise, or any dipping sauce. Heavy weight with footed versos. A stunning set with vivid glazing and bright, vibrant colors. Highly collectible, discriminating collectors all over the world love these lively and colorful pieces.
Asparagus was considered a luxurious delicacy in 19th century France. Presentation was very important and reflected the status of the hostess. French Barbotine pieces are among the most prized. Every important French manufacturer produced sets of "artichauts et asperges en barbotine" at the end of the 19th century. If you have a love for artichokes and asparagus, and pride yourself on setting an elegant table, this beautiful set, complete with serving platter, will be a prized addition to your collection.
The french earthenware Manufacture d’Orchies was created in 1879 by brothers Emile and Joseph L'Herminé Declercq in Orchies near the Belgian border close to the famous ceramic center of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux where the Moulin des Loups factory had been based since the 18th century. The Manufacture d’Orchies created many decorative pieces enhanced with vivid colors. The firm was absorbed by Moulin-des-Loups Hamage in 1923 and despite a rebound in the 1950s, the company definitively closed its doors in the 1980s.
