About the Item

Set of Six Late 19th-Century Anglo-Indian Engraved Brass Charger Plates India, circa 1880s Diameter: 12.75 inches each A striking ensemble of six complementary Anglo-Indian charger plates, hand-engraved in solid brass during the late 19th century. While unified by scale, material, and a shared decorative vocabulary, each plate features its own distinct medallion and border design—ranging from radiating lotus rosettes to intricate scrolling foliage and trellis-patterned leafwork. The variation within the set creates a dynamic visual rhythm, offering both harmony and individuality. Each charger is worked in concentric bands of decoration, with central medallions surrounded by intricately patterned borders. The engraving is deeply cut, with recessed areas darkened to emphasize the fine detail against the golden, polished brass surface. This traditional contrast technique not only adds depth but also highlights the extraordinary craftsmanship associated with major metalworking centers such as Benares and Lucknow during the British Raj. The set’s complementary patterns make it ideal for a dramatic wall display, a curated tabletop arrangement, or as individual decorative accents. Retaining a warm, time-softened patina, the plates embody both the elegance of Indo-Islamic design and the artisanal refinement of late-19th-century colonial India. Condition: Very good antique condition, with minor surface variations and patina consistent with age and handcrafted production. Provenance: Private collection.
