About the Item

This set of eight large soup or pasta dishes was made by Don Pottery circa 1820. The design is part of Don Potery's series of dishes, " Italian Views". The center is decorated with a neoclassical scene of couples relaxing near a ruin while a pair of cupids fly above. The wide border is filled with flowers and leaves, which overflow into the dish's well. The dishes are made of pearlware, most of which was produced in England from 1790 to 1830. Dimensions:9.75" diameter x 1.25 deep Condition: Good. The dishes have small original firing faults and very little wear to the enamel (see images). Price: $600 For an image of this Don Pottery pattern, see page 143 of the Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery 1780-1880, Vol. II by A. W. Coysh and R. K. Henrywood Jun 1, 1989. Background of Don Pottery: John Green of the Leeds Pottery established the pottery in the late eighteenth century, circa 1790. The factory was located in the town of Swinton in South Yorkshire, England, on the River Don. Don pottery produced cream-colored earthenware in the same style as Leeds pottery and white earthenware with blue transfer printing. While the pottery was initially very successful, financial problems arose in the 1830s, and the Greens were forced to sell it in 1834.
