12 "Starry Sky" Art Deco Clear Glass Dessert Plates by Edward Hand for Orrefors

About the Item

12 "Starry Sky" Art Deco glass dessert plates by Edward Hand (1883–1980), for Orrefors, one of the most influential glass designers at Orrefors glassworks during the 20th century. One of his most iconic and beloved engraving patterns is the Starry Sky pattern, created during his time at Orrefors. The design features an elegant, stylized depiction of a star-filled sky, where small stars and shimmering dots are scattered across the glass surface, creating a dreamy, almost poetic effect. It became especially popular during the 1920s and 1930s and has since become a sought-after collector’s item. Today, objects featuring this pattern are considered highlights of Swedish glass art and is a prime example of how Orrefors successfully combined artistic expression with technical mastery, while also reflecting the era’s fascination with nature and space—an inspiration that influenced both art and design during this period. Edward Hald remained active at Orrefors until the 1940s and served as the artistic director for a period. His contributions played a crucial role in establishing Swedish glass art on the international stage, and his works are now featured in several major museums, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
