19th Century Antique German Silver and Cut-Glass Claret Jug

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian acid etched glass and English sterling silver mounted claret jug; an addition to our wine and drink related silverware collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver and cut glass claret jug has a circular, rounded bulbous form. The cylindrical neck of the jug is fitted with an impressive sterling silver, hallmarked mount embellished with impressive chased floral spray decoration on a matte background, all encompassed with a plain border accented with simple drop motifs. The decoration to the mount incorporates an oval vacant cartouche to either side. The underside of the plain spout features a simplified quatrefoil floral motif encompassed with a lozenge shaped border. The mount retains the original hinged, hallmarked cover encompassed with further floral decoration and surmounted with an impressive pierced interlacing scrolling leaf decorated thumb piece. The rim of the cover, lower rim of the mount and girdle to the glass body are encircled with applied bead decoration. This antique Victorian claret jug...

A magnificent, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver Armada jug; part of our wine and drinks related silverware collection This magnificent antique Victorian English sterling silver Armada jug has an elongated pear-shaped form onto a circular pedestal foot. The cylindrical neck of the silver claret jug is embellished with exceptional cast and chased floral and scrolling foliate decoration, all on a matte background. The underside of the pouring lip bears an exceptional shield shaped cartouche displaying a dove with wings extended holding in the claw a branch; all surmounted with a scrolling leaf mantling. The knopped neck is further ornamented with a volute scrolling border flanked with plain bands, to a swept portion encircled with pensile bud designs. The decoration to the body incorporates two large scrolling leaf bordered vacant cartouches, each surmounted with a coronet design embellished with floral ornamentation. Each cartouche is further embellished with a chased figural mask design to the nadir, flanked with large floral motifs. Either side of each cartouche is embellished with an exceptional cast and applied three-dimensional winged mermaid and mermen, gesturing towards the aforementioned coronet. The decoration to the body is further embellished with large scrolling leaf and floral sprays incorporating a cast and applied protruding leopard's head to the anterior portion. This magnificent London silver claret jug retains the original hinged cover, ornamented with chased scrolling leaf decoration and surmounted with an impressive cast and applied opposing scrolling loop finial. This exceptional antique Victorian silver jug is fitted with a cast sterling silver scrolling handle embellished with further foliate decoration to the handpiece. The handle incorporates a lever function to the interior of the handpiece; once depressed this opens/elevates the cover. The domed circular pedestal foot is embellished with alternating chased arch decoration incorporating further floral and foliate designs on a matte background. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian glass and silver mounted claret jug; part of our silver mounted glass collection. This exceptional antique Victorian glass and sterling silver and glass claret jug has a circular rounded form onto a circular spreading foot. The upper portion of the glass body is fitted with the original hallmarked sterling silver mount embellished with an incurved shaped border. The plain domed hallmarked hinged cover is encircled with a band of applied bead decoration and surmounted with an impressive swept, knopped bead decorated finial. This Victorian claret jug is fitted with an S-scroll handle featuring a plain scrolling thumb piece. The glass body of the jug is embellished with an exceptional acid etched illustration depicting a putto entangled with flowing ribbons, playing a stylized percussion triangle whilst standing on the back of a moth style insect. In art and culture, a putto (plural: putti) is a chubby male child, usually nude and occasionally bearing wings. Condition The mount of this antique silver and glass claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The mount has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. The plain glass body of the jug is in perfect condition.
