About the Item
Fabulous large Lamartine enamel and acid cutback cameo depicting a late summer or Autumn scene -a large fir trees, in a landscape with white flashed rocks, polychrome enamelled on a pink and white mottled ground. It is signed Lamartine just above the foot -see the last but one image. On the bottom is the shape code reading 327/728
Very little is actually known about the company Lamartine or their workers.
It is a wonder how a small town in Algeria could produce such sophisticated and fine glass without a long associated tradition of glass blowing, cameo and enamel work on glass. France at the time was very keen to promote new industry in their Algerian colony. After WW1 unemployed glass workers were encouraged to move to Algeria and many of them used to work for Daum -hence the close similarity and exceptionally high quality.
