Rare or Custom Order American Brilliant Cut Glass Bowl, Attrib. Hawkes

About the Item

Rare/Custom American Brilliant Cut Glass Bowl with Hobstar Grid Pattern—Attributed to T.G. Hawkes & Co., Circa 1890–1910 This superb American Brilliant Period cut glass bowl is attributed to the renowned firm T.G. Hawkes & Co., based on stylistic features, exceptional craftsmanship, and its alignment with the firm’s well-documented history of producing custom, prototype, and experimental works in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The bowl is distinguished by a highly unusual and tightly controlled composition: a precise, repeating grid of deeply cut hobstars, free from secondary ornament such as fans, punty cuts, or crosshatching. The surface, almost optical in its uniformity, reflects a disciplined approach to layout and light refraction. Its scalloped sawtooth rim completes the piece with a refined finish typical of Hawkes’ more restrained design language. Unlike most commercial ABP patterns, this design does not appear in any known cataloged repertoire of Libbey, Hawkes, Dorflinger, or Tuthill. The bowl’s remarkable clarity, technical execution, and compositional restraint suggest it may have been • A prototype developed by Hawkes’ cutting department • A cutter’s pattern exercise or shop sample • A custom-commissioned or demonstration piece, possibly for exhibition or private clientele This piece offers a rare opportunity to acquire a likely non-commercial Hawkes workshop pattern, representing the artistic discipline and technical innovation that defined the American Brilliant Period at its peak.
