About the Item

Saara Hopea is a Finnish female designer. She specialised in interior design at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki, and after graduating, she started her career as a furniture designer before working as a draughtsman at Taito under Paavo Tynell. In 1951, she joined Taito while continuing to work as a freelance interior designer, designing furniture and interiors for the gallery/showroom of Wärtsilä (the parent company of Arabia and Nuutajärvi). Her outstanding work caught the attention of Kaj Franck, who was seeking a designer for Nuutajärvi, and she was invited to join the company in 1952. Together with Kaj Franck, she began designing essential items for post-war life, and in addition to numerous products and art pieces, she also worked on packaging, logos, exhibition spaces, and enamel products for Arabia. In 1954 and 1957, she won the Silver Medal at the Milan Triennale. In 1959, she left Nuutajärvi to take over the family business, but despite her short seven-year career, her achievements as a glass designer are immeasurable. This is a lidded container designed in 1956 and manufactured from 1956 to 1960. The combination of thick red glass and silver gives it a luxurious feel, making it a true work of art. Available in two sizes, this is the smaller size. Signed “S. Hopea Nuutajärvi Notsjö -58”. A rare piece made in 1958. ※In good condition with no noticeable damage.
