About the Item

A fine antique Staffordshire pottery Toby Jug. In the form of a seated, smiling man holding a jug. The man's tricorn hat serves as a lid, and an integral handle runs down his back. Simply a great Toby Jug! Date: 19th Century Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition with no cracks, or repairs. Condition Details: There are glaze skips throughout (including hat cover, handle, jug handle, sleeve). We noted a small flake to the hat's rim edge and to the handle as well. There is fine and tight crazing with some light staining and a few expected firing flaws. Otherwise, there are some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Marks: Unmarked Measurements: Height: ca. 9 3/4 in. Width: ca. 4 1/2 in. Georgian Toby Jug - Wood C1785
By Ralph Wood Pottery
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
A fine early toby jug, from the Wood family of potters. Traditional form, seated and holding a foaming jug of beer, dressed in clothing of the day. Toby jugs originated in the mid 18th century in Staffordshire. The name perhaps comes from Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth night; although I think both the jug and Sir Toby got their names from the song "The Brown Jug...
