About the Item

This elegant grey and white stoneware pitcher was created by T.&R. Boote in England in the 1840s. The pitcher is made out of light grey stoneware and fitted with a hinged metal lid. The lid carries the signature Nixon & Sons. It is decorated with scenes painted in Greek revival style in white. A band of vine is running around the neck of the pitcher. Wine, vine and grapes are associated in the iconographical language of ancient Greece with Dionysos and his followers, in Roman art with bacchanals. The white silhouettes on the vessel show young women with amphoras and a boy carrying a tray on his head with two different types of vessels and a beaker. The handle shows the face of a bearded mythological figure. The pitcher is signed on the base.
