A magnificent, fine and impressive antique Victorian English acid etched glass and sterling silver gilt claret jug; an addition to our wine and drinks related silverware collection.
This magnificent antique Victorian glass and sterling silver gilt claret jug has an ovoid ewer shaped form.
The plain waisted neck is embellished with a fine and impressive cast and applied strapwork encased Bacchus mask ornamentation below the flared pouring lip.
The upper shaped rim is ornamented with a chased decorated leaf border.
The glass body of this antique claret jug is embellished with fine and impressive acid etched foliate, grape clusters and tendril ornamentation incorporating a central bordered vacant portion accented with mask ornamentation to the upper portion.
The glass vessel is subdivided into three framed portions by fine and impressive chased husk decorated straps terminating to the upper portions with further cast and applied mask ornamentations.
The upper and lower sterling silver portions of the body are embellished with fine and impressive bright cut engraved interlacing fruiting vine designs and plain scalloped rims.
This magnificent jug is fitted with an exceptional, Fine and impressive cast sterling silver opposing scroll handle embellished to the upper portion with a substantial figural ornament depicting Venus arching elegantly and resolutely backwards to feed cupid from a grape cluster.
The lower portion of the handle is ornamented with bead decoration to an impressive chased decorated volute scrolling leaf terminal.
The glass vessel is fitted to a rounded shaped receiver to a Fine and impressive chased decorated lobed and ribbed knop and circular domed spreading foot.
The foot is ornamented a broad band of chased diaper pattern and bead decoration incorporating three mask designs; the masks are identical to those on the straps.
This impressive antique claret jug retains the original cork stopper fitted with the original cylindrical hallmarked sterling silver mount and bead decorated finial/handle.
The surface of this antique claret jug and stopper retain the original gilding.
This magnificent claret jug is of the highest quality and in exceptional presentation condition; this jug is one of the finest examples of its type you could hope to acquire.
Condition
This antique claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The glass body is in perfect condition. The applied and chased decoration is very sharp and the bright cut engraved and acid etched decoration is very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the upper and lower portions of the body and rim of the stopper are all very clear.

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian acid etched glass and English sterling silver mounted claret jug; an addition to our wine and drink related silverware collection.
This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver and cut glass claret jug has a circular, rounded bulbous form.
The cylindrical neck of the jug is fitted with an impressive sterling silver, hallmarked mount embellished with impressive chased floral spray decoration on a matte background, all encompassed with a plain border accented with simple drop motifs.
The decoration to the mount incorporates an oval vacant cartouche to either side.
The underside of the plain spout features a simplified quatrefoil floral motif encompassed with a lozenge shaped border.
The mount retains the original hinged, hallmarked cover encompassed with further floral decoration and surmounted with an impressive pierced interlacing scrolling leaf decorated thumb piece.
The rim of the cover, lower rim of the mount and girdle to the glass body are encircled with applied bead decoration.

This exceptional antique Victorian glass and sterling silver and glass claret jug has a circular rounded form onto a circular spreading foot.
The upper portion of the glass body is fitted with the original hallmarked sterling silver mount embellished with an incurved shaped border.
The plain domed hallmarked hinged cover is encircled with a band of applied bead decoration and surmounted with an impressive swept, knopped bead decorated finial.
This Victorian claret jug is fitted with an S-scroll handle featuring a plain scrolling thumb piece.
The glass body of the jug is embellished with an exceptional acid etched illustration depicting a putto entangled with flowing ribbons, playing a stylized percussion triangle whilst standing on the back of a moth style insect.
In art and culture, a putto (plural: putti) is a chubby male child, usually nude and occasionally bearing wings.

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver and cut glass claret jug has a circular rounded, globular form.
The cylindrical neck is fitted with a fine and impressive plain sterling silver hallmarked mount with the original hallmarked flat hinged cover.
The cover is surmounted with a simplified tri-lobed silver thumb piece.
This antique claret jug is fitted with a plain angular rounded handle with scrolling upper terminal and featuring a leaf ornamentation to the lower portion.
