Large Majolica Dish France Rouen Manufactory of Jean-Baptiste Guillibaud, 1730

About the Item

Big dish. France, Rouen, Manufactory of Jean-Baptiste Guillibaud, around 1730. Majolica. Brand: "Gb" linked in italics, in blue. Diameter 44 cm. Conservation: flaking recomposed in old restoration; some chipping on the edge. The large plate with a wavy edge is painted in high-fire polychrome with an ornament inspired by the Chinese green family of the K'ang-hi era and interpreted with great pictorial mastery. The refined motif is composed of trellis elements on the brim with floral ornaments called "lupinella". The cavetto hosts a landscape on the shore of a lake with large pagodas enclosed within fences, trees, gigantic flowers and birds. For dishes of the same typology see for example S.de Plas, Les faïences de Rouen du nord de la France et de la ragion parisienne, Paris s.d., pp. 30-31 and others preserved at The Met in New York
