About the Item

This exceptional mid-century French glazed ceramic wall dish is a captivating piece from the Manufacture de Longwy, made in the 1950s. It is part of a limited edition, with only 18 of 200 made, and bears the iconic 1950 Longwy stamp. This rare ceramic dish is a true reflection of the artistic evolution of post-war France, encapsulating the period's shift towards rustic and artisanal design influences, inspired by the works of Jean Touret and the Ateliers de Marolles. In the 1950s, French design saw a return to medieval, rustic and peasant roots, contrasting with the growing trend for industrial furniture and the influence of modernist designers. This movement adopted a more traditional and artisanal aesthetic, celebrating French history. The pattern, titled Les Semailles (Sowing), is glazed by Albert Kirchtetter and vividly captures the essence of farm life with its bright, vibrant colours. The pattern combines rustic French charm with high-quality craftsmanship, making it a perfect choice for interiors seeking an authentic, quintessentially French style. Measuring 37 cm (10.6 inches) in diameter and 4 cm (3 inches) in height, this stunning wall dish is a stylish and eye-catching piece, ideal for both contemporary and traditional interiors. Whether displayed on a wall or integrated into a mid-century modern setting, this vintage ceramic wall dish showcases the timeless appeal of French craftsmanship. Key Features: Mid-Century French Ceramic Wall Plate Made by Longwy, 1950s Limited Edition: 18 of 200 Glazed by Albert Kirchtetter Model named Les Semailles Diameter: 37 cm (10.6 inches), Height: 4 cm (3 inches) Stamped 1950 Longwy A remarkable example of French rustic design, this piece embodies the intersection of medieval inspiration, traditional French art and mid-century modern design. It is a true collector's item and an ideal addition to any collection of French ceramics or vintage home decor. The Early Years of Manufacture de Longwy: Founded in 1798, shortly after the French Revolution, Longwy pottery capitalized on the rich mineral resources of the Lorraine region. Situated at the crossroads of France, Belgium, and Germany, the town became an industrial hub for ceramics. Initially, the company produced functional ceramics, such as pottery and basic decorative items. A Flourishing Artistic Production in the 19th Century: By the 19th century, the Longwy manufactory experienced a major transformation under the leadership of Jean-Auguste Pottier. This period marked the shift toward refined decorative ceramics, with the introduction of collaborations with renowned artists. Pieces were adorned with intricate floral, geometric, and nature-inspired motifs, influenced by the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. The Art Nouveau and Art Deco Periods: The Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods solidified Longwy’s international reputation. Its pieces, from faience tiles to decorative vases, were highly prized for their original design and refined aesthetics. Notable artists like Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer, Gaston d’Audiffret, and Paul Follot played a pivotal role in the company’s success, with Longwy receiving accolades in global exhibitions in Paris, London, and Brussels. Challenges in the 20th Century: The 20th century brought significant challenges for the Longwy manufactory, especially during the two World Wars. While production continued, demand waned, and the company faced economic difficulties. By the 1970s, competition and market shifts posed even greater challenges. Resilience and Revival: Despite these setbacks, Longwy Ceramic Manufacture has endured and reinvented itself. Today, it continues to produce high-quality ceramics, blending traditional techniques with contemporary designs. Longwy remains a cultural institution, attracting collectors and art enthusiasts, and offering exhibitions and factory tours to showcase its rich history. Conclusion: The Longwy Ceramic Manufacture is a testament to the evolution of French ceramic art, transitioning from Art Nouveau to Art Deco, while honoring its artisan roots. Its legacy continues through decorative ceramics that reflect the region’s rich industrial and artisanal heritage, making them highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Jerome Massier Fils, Majolica Platter, Vallauris, End 19th C.
By Delphin Massier
Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR
French Napoleon III majolica slip aperitive or dessert set by Jerome MASSIER, Vallauris, France, end of 19th century. 6 (2x3) plates : anemone, pansy and daisy - Diameter : 7.5"(19cm). 1 platter with the three same flowers - Height : 3"(7.5cm), Diameter : 13"(33cm). Platter and plates (except one) are intaglio stamped. "J.Massier Vallauris" (platter), "Jerome Massier Vallauris" (4 plates) "Jerome Massier Fils Vallauris AM" (1 plate). Excellent original condition (an original crack in the firing on a plate, see last photo). The Massiers’ work represents a link between traditional Victorian majolica and Art Nouveau pottery. There were three Massiers working in the second half of the nineteenth century, heirs to an old line of potters, who transformed traditional utilitarian ceramics into an art form. Their ancestors had worked for several centuries in Vallauris on the French Riviera, where, in the twentieth century, Pablo Picasso was reigning ceramic artist. Delphin Massier (1836 - 1907), and Clément (1845 -1917) were brothers. A cousin, Jérome (1850 – 1916) worked with them, using the signature « Jérome Massier fils ». By 1899 the family firm was divided into branches headed by these three men. In 1860 the Massiers began to produce their vibrantly colored majolica, perhaps inspired by the flowers of the Cote d’Azur. Clément was particularly interested in designs drawn from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as from Renaissance maiolica...
