Spanish Toledo Gold Inlaid Damascene Iron plate, islamic art, Felipa Madrid 1894

About the Item

This is a rare chance to own a piece of important "ZULOAGA WARE" (The preservation of damascening in Spain was almost entirely due to the genius of a single family, the Zuloagas ) or "Toledo gold inlaid ware" Nasrid Revival gold-inlaid iron centerpiece bowl, made in Madrid in 1894 by the famous maker "Felipa", Spain, late 19th century. the interesting part of this plate is the exceptional gold work on the front and on the back side, the middle part of the back has a round button shaped part that was probably used to secure it to a base at some point. with highlighted gold damascened borders with miniature vine leaves and repeated psudo-calligraphic inscriptions, six-pointed stars, main decorative panels with further geometric star shapes surrounded by circular medallions in gold damascened decoration, with some additional gold granulated decoration. The design of this spectacular plate finds its inspiration in geometric patterns found on architectural elements of the Alhambra palace in Grenada. Spanish metalworkers such as the Zuloagas became masters at replicating and damascening the Moorish motifs onto their metalwork. Not only did the smiths adopt the intricate motifs but they also copied the Nasrid motto in Arabic script "la ghalib illa Allah" (there is no victor but God) which also appears on our example. This plate showcases an amalgamation of influences typified by the burst of creativity and originality of leading 19th century European artisans.

French faience Passover plate, JUDAICA 19th century
Located in Tel Aviv - Jaffa, IL
this plate has a creme white background, the center painted with a man holding a lamb before a cityscape, probably a depiction of Jerusalem by someone who never actually visited the city or even see it, under the man there is the word Passover "פסח" the rim with the order of the Seder, and some grape vines between them. Passover, also called Pesach ( Biblical Hebrew: חַג הַפֶּסַח‎, romanized: Ḥag haPesaḥ), is a major Jewish holiday, one of the three pilgrimage festivals, that celebrates the Biblical story of the Israelites' escape from slavery in Egypt. Pesach starts on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan which is considered the first month of the Hebrew year. The Hebrew calendar...
