About the Item

Charming Swedish Mid-Century Glazed Earthenware Platter with Performance Motif featuring Ballerina on Horse, Designed by Swedish-Estonian Ceramics Designer and Artist Mari Simmulson, and Manufactured by Swedish Ceramics Manufacturer Upsala Ekeby A platter featuring a striking and quite festive design of a ballerina standing upright on the back of a rearing horse, surrounded by what resembles a light show and also draws reference to the night sky. The designer, Mari Simmulson, was born in an Estonian family in St Petersburg during the late Russian Empire. She studied in Estonia and Germany, eventually doing an internship at the Finnish company Arabia. Fleeing Estonia during the bombings of WWII (having already fled the Russian revolution less than 30 years before), she was given the chance to start a new life in Sweden, where contacts made during her time at Arabia helped her become one of the most influential designer in mid-century Sweden.
