About the Item

A fine example of Viennese Secession design. This tea set — two teapots, a sugar pot, and a milk jug — stands on a lipped circular tray and is stripped of ornament. Each piece has a concise silhouette, redacted back to clean, elongated tapered lines. Its hand-hammered texture is both brilliantly tactile as well as visually delightful, shimmering in the mirroring reflections of light. Kaffehaus culture was the bedrock of artistic exchange during the Secession period. Adolf Loos and Gustav Klimt frequently discussed ideas and art in cafes, alongside coffee house poets Arthur Schnitzler, Alfred Polgar, and Egon Erwin Kisch. This tea set then carries a tangible, tactile connection to the artistic exchanges and conversations of the movement.
