"Women with Baskets, " Rare Pair of Art Deco Decorated Plates, Italy
About the Item
Painted with freshness and sophistication, this pair of Italian Art Deco plates depict elegant female figures, each balancing baskets on their heads, striding toward a tower in the distance. One in a blue Classical robe, with her Art Deco hair flying back, is moving toward a stylized multi-storied building, while the other is looking toward a pair of sailing ships near a towered island. The palette -- ocean blue, oxblood and forest green -- is vividly applied.

"Mermaid with Dolphins & Starfish", Rare & Ambitious Art Deco Platter, Mequinion
By Roger Mequinion
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large and bold, this Art Deco ceramic platter featuring a mermaid trumpeting a shell and embracing a dolphin while another dolphin and starfish are cavorting in the water nearby, was made Roger Mequinion, who produced an entirely unique series of ceramic pieces with thick layers of glaze that he sandblasted to create a layered, three-dimensional design. Here, the outer glaze is a deep red color, but the sandblasting reveals layers of light red and white underneath. Mequinion was the first sculptor to work for René Lalique, and helped the master develop a sandblasting technique for his early glass...
