About the Item
Doulton Lambeth Girl and Pigs in Landscape Jug by Hannah Barlow et al., 1883
A masterful Doulton Lambeth stoneware jug, created in 1883 by the esteemed animal specialist artist Hannah B. Barlow (active at Doulton, Lambeth, 1871–1913), This exquisite piece stands 9 inches high and has a 5-inch diameter. The jug features an applied handle and is decorated with Barlow’s signature incised sgraffito technique. It depicts a charming scene of a standing farm girl whose basket is being 'stolen' by four playful pigs, set against a vivid landscape that encircles the ovoid body. The neck and 3-inch base are adorned with enameled cobalt stiff leaves. The artist's mark, along with numerous other marks and an assistant's mark, can be found under the base. This jug is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. It represents a superb example of Doulton Lambeth's craftsmanship and Barlow’s exceptional talent.
