French Majolica Asparagus Plate Attributed to Salins

$250

About

A colorful and highly-decorative Majolica asparagus plate featuring four asparagus spears resting on a leaf on a turquoise ground with tan basket weave around the edge. The plate is unmarked but clearly attributed to Salins. The earthenware producer Salins was established in 1857 in Salins-les-Bains in Lorraine, near the border with Switzerland. The site of an old Capuchin convent with its surrounding premises was converted to a faience pottery. Salins was awarded a silver medal at the Paris Universal Exposition in 1889 and a gold medal at the Paris International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1912. The bulk of Salins Majolica production consisted of artichoke and asparagus plates, platters and cradles. Pieces were generally well modeled and glazed.
