Japanese antique vertical striped tea bowl/19th to early 20th century/Seto ware

About the Item

This is a Seto ware tea bowl made in Japan from the late Edo period to the Meiji period (late 19th to early 20th century). Seto is a kiln with a long history in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. (Seto kilns are marked with red circles on the map.) It is said to have originated around the 13th century. In the latter half of the Edo period, painted tableware with this modern design was produced and loved by many common people. The name of this design is called “Mugiwarate. Mugiwara” = barley straw Te” = like The unique striped pattern reminds one of ears of barley, hence the name. Originally, this bowl had a lid, but many of the surviving “Mugiwarate” bowls have lost their lids. The Japan Folk Crafts Museum also has a similar object in its collection. Please see the reference photo. This rustic design is still loved by many Japanese and is still popular today. The surface of this bowl has a slightly cloudy atmosphere, while the inside has a transparent atmosphere. It is an interesting vessel that allows you to enjoy different atmospheres. There is a small scratch on the bottom, but it does not leak water. You can enjoy matcha, café latte, coffee, etc. There are no major scratches and it is in relatively good condition. A special storage wooden box is also included. Recommended item. Weight: 194g [We mainly sell old Japanese items. We've seen tens of thousands of items so far.
