About the Item
Kyllikki Salmenhaara was Finland's most accomplished ceramic artist, who refined her exceptional pottery skills into an art form, as well as a researcher and educator who devoted her life to the pursuit of ceramics.
From 1938 to 1943, she studied ceramics under Elsa Elenius at the Central School of Arts and Crafts.
During her time there, she won the top prize in an in-house competition, demonstrating her exceptional talent.
After graduating, she worked as a glass designer at Kauklahti Glassworks for three years, then in 1946, she studied under Nathalie Krebs, a glaze chemist at SAXBO in Denmark.
She later worked at Sakari Vapaavuori's studio before joining ARABIA in 1947.
Initially, she worked as an assistant to Olga Osol in the applied arts department, but in 1950, she transferred to the art department, where she remained until 1961.
In particular, her works after her stay in the United States in 1956, which featured glazes that highlighted the texture of the clay and powerful forms, received high praise, including the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale.
After sustaining an injury to her finger from a thin blade mixed into the clay during work, she left ARABIA and went on to work as an educator and researcher at the Art and Design School in Taiwan from 1961 and at the Helsinki University of Art and Design from 1963 until her death in 1981.
In 1974, she published a book titled “Keramiikka,” compiling her experiences and research findings on materials, wheel-throwing techniques, clay and glaze formulations, and firing methods.
At the Milan Triennale, she won a silver medal in 1951, an honorary award in 1954, the Grand Prix in 1957, and a gold medal in 1960, receiving an award in every edition she participated in.
This piece was made by the art department of ARABIA.
The handle flows smoothly from the cup and is wide and stable, which is another characteristic of her work.
It is thought to have been made between around 1957 and 1961.
It is signed “ARABIA KS”.
