About the Item

A rare survivor from a fleeting moment in Cowan Pottery's history, before it closed at the onset of the Great Depression, this plate designed by Thelma Frazier Winter depicts a riot of aquatic life, including fish, starfish, coral and seaweed. It is glazed in a lovely shade of periwinkle blue highlighted with areas of sea green. Winter was one of a spectacular group of artists gathered together by Cowan Pottery in the 1920s, many of whom -- such as Waylande Gregory and Victor Schreckengost -- went on to distinguished careers after Cowan closed in the 1931. Frazier married Edward Winter, one of America's greatest enamel artists before and after World War II, and at that point she did both ceramic and enamel work. This piece shows the Cowan mark on the bottom.

Here, the outer glaze is a deep red color, but the sandblasting reveals layers of light red and white underneath. Mequinion was the first sculptor to work for René Lalique, and helped the master develop a sandblasting technique for his early glass...
