Mid Century Modern plate by Robert Picault, France

About the Item

Earthenware plate with matt grey glaze depicting a bull by the celebrated French ceramicist Robert Picault, Vallauris, South of France. Signed to base. THE PLATE IS NOT SOLD WITH THE STAND BUT A STAND COULD BE ORDERED IF REQUIRED FOR A COST OF £100. As is known, movements in painting from Cezanne onwards used everyday objects as subjects and likewise, potters of the period drew on art. Many painters followed Picasso's example and plunged into pottery, assisting pottery studios who did well as a result. The hotbed for this art pottery was Vallauris in the South of France. Robert Picault working at this time in Vallauris was one of the noteworthy figures producing work of a high standard.
