About the Item

A fine and large - enormous - coffee or chocolate pot in pearlware, with “House & Fence” decoration, in imitation of a Chinese original. It is thought that these oversixed pots were intended as decoration, or to be put in the window of coffee-houses as a form af advertisement. Certainly, it show no signs of being used - the condition is excellent. In late 18th-century England, coffee drinking was becoming increasingly popular, particularly in urban areas like London. Coffeehouses, which had started to emerge in the 17th century, became important social and intellectual hubs where people from various backgrounds could gather to discuss politics, literature, science, and business. Coffeehouses were often referred to as "penny universities" because for the price of a penny, one could buy a cup of coffee and engage in stimulating conversations. These establishments attracted writers, artists, merchants, politicians, and intellectuals, fostering an environment of intellectual exchange and debate. The atmosphere of coffeehouses was conducive to the exchange of ideas and the dissemination of information. They often had bulletin boards where newspapers, pamphlets, and advertisements were posted, allowing patrons to stay informed about current events and public debates.

In 1756, the company was granted the status of "Supplier to the King," which allowed it to use the "Royal" designation in its name. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the company experienced significant growth and expanded its product line to include more elaborate and ornate pieces.
