Antique German Silver Gilt Tazzas Centerpieces

About the Item

A magnificent, fine and impressive, pair of antique German silver tazzas or centerpieces; an addition to our continental silverware collection. This magnificent antique German gilt silver tazzas or centerpieces has a circular rounded form onto a decorative pedestal and domed spreading foot. The surface of each tazza is embellished with a circular chased decorated artistic scene encircled with bead ornamentation. One tazza depicts a putto on a ram's back while those around point a staff and wear a headdress, the other displays a winged putto riding a scaled creature around three other characters in a vast Pool of water, each scene has a wide array of mountains to the background. The raised rounded sides of these silver tazzas are encompassed with pierced decorated interlacing scrolling ornamentation accented with floral and berry motifs in addition to putto designs wrapped in fabric swags. The sides are further embellished with applied bearded mask designs accented with a foliate headdress. The rim of this impressive centerpiece is encompassed two bands of bead ornamentation. The ornamental body of each tazza surmounts an exceptional pedestal constructed of two figures braced against each other and supporting the bowl on their shoulders. The knops to the lower portion of the pedestals are encircled with bands of leaf festoons, featuring floral motifs. The large circular domed spreading foot of each centerpiece is encircled with foliate festoon ornamentation, all on a textured background. The surface of these exceptional German silver tazzas retain the original gilding. The Hanau pseudo-marks to the interior of the cover are unidentified; pseudo-marks were not registered with an administrative office and no records exist to check them against determining an attributed identification to be a comparison or probability. In art and culture, a putto (plural: putti) is a chubby male child, usually nude and occasionally bearing wings. Condition These antique centerpieces are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. These footed salvers have little sign of use or wear; this is determined by the very sharp decoration and even wear of the original gilding. The Hanau pseudo-marks struck to the surface of each centerpiece are clear in keeping with age. Dimensions Diameter of rim 16.9 cm/6.7". Diameter of foot 9.3 cm/3.7". Height 10.7 cm/4.2". Total weight 24 troy ounces/746g. Maker: Unknown Date: circa 1860 Origin: Hanau, Germany. Video: A video of this fine piece is available upon request. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware.
